The Laptop Satchel by Vanilla House - Cool Stitches

The Laptop Satchel by Vanilla House

The Laptop Satchel was a recent project in our Bags Totes Organizers subscription box. I really enjoyed making this satchel because it was a quick sew and is so sleek and handy. The fabric I used as the main fabric is from deep in the back of my stash of decades old fabric because I shipped all the selected fabric inventory in our boxes! Not a bad problem to have, but...

The pattern is well written with plenty of illustrations and detail to promote ease of construction. To accomplish the tailored inset of the top and handles, especially with contrasting fabric, it is important to measure, cut, and stitch with accuracy. Here is where precision matters.

I like the firm structure accomplished with the extra firm peltex 90 we used. It really is the central player in the design. It was easy to manage with the construction process provided. The inside of the bag has two pockets - one on each inside wall. One is a zipper pocket and the other a patch pocket. Very handy. There is a template provided to construct the zipper so it turns our quit nice.

The handle construction is facilitated by using double sided basting tape and it works well to use this process too. Now we are up to final steps and there are multiple layers of interior and exterior fabrics as well as the two layers of peltex. Lots to handle, so you may want to change to a size 90/16 needle depending on the weight of your fabric.

The last step is to attach the bias binding around the outer edge of the fabric. I elected to to a matching fabric because I was unsure of the look of a contrasting edge. I love this look so I'm glad I did. The instructions call for a regular method of attaching the binding by sewing both sides by machine. I elected to sew the second / final side by hand to insure a nice finish without errant seams showing.

This bag is so handy for more than a laptop. I've been using it to tote projects and class printouts, as well as notepads and ipads. While I don't have any overstock boxes for this project, I highly recommend it. Visit Vanilla House to get your Laptop Satchel pattern! You'll love making and using it!
